Opinion Story

Music Education

Music education in schools across the globe has grown more and more over the years. Though some people might think its just a boring class where you learn boring music, I believe that music education not only teaches students music but also teaches students life skills, such as teamwork and patience. It is proven that kids who study a musical instrument are more likely to excel in all of their studies, work better in teams, have enhanced critical thinking skills, and stay in school.
My music life didn't start off with the love for music I have right now. It all started in 6th grade instrument selection night in middle school. I tried out and learned about many instruments, including my instrument now, the F horn. At first, it was overwhelming and scary but when school started and when I started to go to band class everything changed. After being in middle school band, I learned that band class isn't just a normal class, it's a family full of supporters, and unforgettable memories.
When marching season for high school came up, I was even more scared and stressed. It was all new and came to me quick. I just stuck with my friends and hoped everything would turn out fine. Turns out, everything was fine. Marching season was a long, hard, but a rewarding journey and I had to sacrifice a lot of time and effort to make the ensemble great. In return from the band, I got unforgettable memories, unending friendships, and even a free life lesson. Two thing I learned is that not everything will go your way and that you have to give in a lot to get more out of something.
Marching Season was full of surprises, joy, disappointments and much more. We had rehearsals early on late start days and rehearsals during the evening every day, it took a lot of dedication but in the end, it was all worth it.
When people say that band is not fun or band isn't hard, I try to understand why they might think that, maybe they think it's only playing slow, bland, and boring music or just slacking around. To me, band is a family with 300 people waiting to help you, or just waiting to have fun in the stands in a football night. Band is not only an experience like no other but a life lesson as a whole. In my opinion, it teaches you more life lessons than most academic classes.

Personal Essays

1. One idea that the writer gave in the section was that I had to pick a topic I'm passionate with but have to create a big enough frame for the audience to relate.

2. One idea that I learned from the section is that generalizations keep the readers away while specific information draws the reader in.

3. Three suggestions are

a. Use the hook. The hook is a device used to get your readers attention. It is how you welcome them and their first impression.

b. Write as evocatively as possible. Use all senses.

c. Watch your construction. Personal essays by definition contain a personal perspective.

Student of The Month Story

Who    - Christian Villanueva
What   - Student of the Month Award
When  - Last Week
Where - Bowie High School
Why    - For Being the Most Out-Standing Student
How    - By Putting His Effort into the School

Last Week, Christian Villanueva, a freshman, was awarded the Student of the Month. The Student of the Month Award was awarded to Christian for being the most out-standing student here at James Bowie High School. He was awarded this award because of his huge efforts to the school and his classmates.
    "I was excited," said Christian.
The award was one of many he had won from his efforts he put into the school. He is known by school staff and student council for his works for the school. He is hardworking, kind, and caring towards his peers and classmates.
"In my spare time I play sports, study, and help out my school," stated Christian.
Christian had always liked to spend time on academics and giving to the community. He believes that Bowie high school could be the number one high school in the country if everyone had cared for it and took care for it.
"My inspiration was and still is Derek Jeter," Christian declared.
As a baseball fan, he had dedication like a baseball player, working harder and harder to achieve what he wants, which is for the school to be a better place in general.
"I was often bullied and that really brought me down," admitted Christian.
Although some people may have liked him and his efforts, there were a few exceptions. He was often bullied because some people thought he was a nerd who liked school way too much. although being bullied, Christian still wants to help the school and do what he likes.
"After high school, I would like to attend college," exclaimed Christian.
The next and the final Bowie student of the month will be revealed on May 3rd.

Nut Graf

Nut Graf, meaning "in a nutshell", is a term used by the editors of newspapers and magazines. Nut graf is used to tell the reader why the article is important and worth a while. It is the most important part of the story.
The nut Graf is written like a article with the important information answering the 5 W's and "how" in the front and less important information in the back. It is written without giving away the ending of the story.

d. 2 things the judges liked
e. Overall impression about photographer

Video 1
1. Alyssa Schukar
2. Daily Life
3. Not enough strong singles, all of the pictures felt the same, the good pictures made the others look bad.
4. The back grounds, the good graphics.
5. I not really a fan of this photographer because how she sometimes focuses on the dark side and it just gives off a weary, and dark mood.

Video 2
1. Travis Haughton
2. Activities
3. A lot if kids, off focus pictures, pictures with signs
4. Pictures that did not look staged, different levels of background
5. I think some pictures were tight but i liked the creativity on some of the pictures.

Video 3
1. Nick Adams
2. Journalism / story.
3. Bad focus, too boring, too many kids.
4. Some originality, the effort.
5. I like the effort the photographer made to be creative.

Video 4
1. Jordan Murph
2. Action / sports
3. No subject in a picture,  inconsistency, too artificial on some pictures.
4. Good use of color, good point of views.
5. I think the photographer can take great pictures but is very inconsistent in taking great pictures.

2.
a. What did the judges note as strengths as they were critiquing it?
b. What do you see as strengths? Do you see any weaknesses?

Winning portfolio
1. Angles, Picture with every subject doing something, cool shots like the water droplets one, and they like the interesting moments in a game that was photographed.
2. I like how the photographer used angles to create more emotion or depth in the pictures.

3.
a. briefly describe the process the judges went through in deciding the winner.

1. They looked at the strengths and the weaknesses of the portfolios and eliminated the bad ones. They picked Dustin's portfolio because he had no bad pictures and had skill and used his skills while taking and editing his pictures.

Part 2.
watch parts A and 1 - 7.

1. I agree with the judges on the base ball picture with the 3 holes showing a subject each. I agree that the picture was not very strong and needed more action. ( portfolio #2)

2. Assuming "1" is the best picture, I disagree with the sumo wrestler getting 1st on the 4th video. I thought the baseball player under the rainbow showed great lighting from the yellow sky to the subject being a silhouette. I also liked the use of point of view putting the subject right under the rainbow. The sumo wrestler picture was great with the originality and the black and white, but I think the Baseball player under the rainbow should've gotten first.
