Opinion Story

Music Education

Music education in schools across the globe has grown more and more over the years. Though some people might think its just a boring class where you learn boring music, I believe that music education not only teaches students music but also teaches students life skills, such as teamwork and patience. It is proven that kids who study a musical instrument are more likely to excel in all of their studies, work better in teams, have enhanced critical thinking skills, and stay in school.
My music life didn't start off with the love for music I have right now. It all started in 6th grade instrument selection night in middle school. I tried out and learned about many instruments, including my instrument now, the F horn. At first, it was overwhelming and scary but when school started and when I started to go to band class everything changed. After being in middle school band, I learned that band class isn't just a normal class, it's a family full of supporters, and unforgettable memories.
When marching season for high school came up, I was even more scared and stressed. It was all new and came to me quick. I just stuck with my friends and hoped everything would turn out fine. Turns out, everything was fine. Marching season was a long, hard, but a rewarding journey and I had to sacrifice a lot of time and effort to make the ensemble great. In return from the band, I got unforgettable memories, unending friendships, and even a free life lesson. Two thing I learned is that not everything will go your way and that you have to give in a lot to get more out of something.
Marching Season was full of surprises, joy, disappointments and much more. We had rehearsals early on late start days and rehearsals during the evening every day, it took a lot of dedication but in the end, it was all worth it.
When people say that band is not fun or band isn't hard, I try to understand why they might think that, maybe they think it's only playing slow, bland, and boring music or just slacking around. To me, band is a family with 300 people waiting to help you, or just waiting to have fun in the stands in a football night. Band is not only an experience like no other but a life lesson as a whole. In my opinion, it teaches you more life lessons than most academic classes.
